Education department fails rural learners

MEC for Education  in Limpopo, Ms Thembisile Nwedamutswu, must urgently appoint a contractor to start building new school blocks and do renovations for Mphengwa High School at Eldorado Village in the Blouberg Municipality.

Learners have long been skipping their classes during rainy and winter seasons due to the department’s failure  to fix the roofs which was damaged by a thunder storm in 2011. The school caters for more than 450 learners and all  three block classrooms are roofless.

Important resources like chairs, books, desks and chalkboards are badly damaged.  Most of the learners are forced to sit on the floor or on the frames of the damaged chairs and desks while attending their classes. The matter was reported by the school  to the department in October 2011 but nothing was done.

This is a clear indication that the department is not serious about the safety of our children let alone their education.

In 2012, the DA engaged the former MEC, Dickson Masemola, on this issue and further suggested that his department provide mobile classrooms while fixing the roofs. Unfortunately nothing happened after our meeting.

It has recently been alleged that the department has allocated an estimated R5.7 million to build new blocks, fix the roofs and buy new furniture for the school.

The DA welcomes the allocation of funds but MEC Nwedamutswu must appoint the contractor to commence building the school.

The DA will engage the department to ensure that it keeps to the prescribed deadlines for repairing this school.
