Electricity supply suspended at Winburg SAPS

George Michalakis, MP

DA member in the National Council of Provinces for the Free State and constituency head for Lejweleputswa Region

Electricity supply to the Winburg SAPS Inspector unit has been cut off since last week Wednesday due to non-payment by the provincial Department of Public Works.

The Masilonyana Municipality was forced to suspend electricity supply due to non-payment of R13 207.33 as per the municipal statement.

The provincial Department of Public Works are responsible for the management and payment of government properties. The department in the recent past has also failed to pay the utility bills of hospitals and clinics in the Maluti-a-Phofung  municipality.

The SAPS renders an essential service to the public and the fulfilment of its duties should not be crippled by mismanagement. The MEC for Public Works, Sam Mashinini, must immediately make payment so that electricity supply can be restored.

The DA will submit written questions to MEC Mashinini in the Free State Provincial Legislature to get to the bottom of this culture of non-payment persistent in the department.

The Free State provincial government of Premier Ace Magashule are increasingly unable to meet its financial obligations. It is indicative of a culture of financial and administrative mismanagement embedded in government.
