Gauteng Finance department must account for broadband contract

Mike Moriarty MPL

DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Finance

The Gauteng Provincial Treasury and Finance departments outlined their e-government development strategy for the province.

However, serious questions remain regarding the rollout of broadband in Gauteng. These include the effective use of a single supplier for the contract and an ongoing investigation by the Auditor-General.

I will be submitting written questions to the MEC of Finance, Barbara Creecy, to establish the following:

  1. When was a management letter received from the Auditor-General with regards to this contract?
  2. Have allegations of a single supplier been resolved and if so, how?

The MEC also failed to explain exactly how this system will benefit the residents of Gauteng.

The DA fully supports efforts to bring government closer to the people of Gauteng. However, questions remain regarding the responsiveness of government to issues raised by citizens through this e-government medium.  Core inefficiencies in government must be addressed first for this system to become viable.
