MEC must investigate alleged abuse of Soweto hawkers by metro police

John Moodey MPL

Caucus Leader and Gauteng Provincial Leader

Reports suggest that JMPD members abused their authority last week when they allegedly severely mistreated informal traders in Protea Gardens, Soweto.

Victims relayed several incidents of abuse, including being forced to eat chillies, being kicked and punched, and having chillies rubbed in their wounds.

Informal traders live on the very edge of abject poverty and have limited means of maintaining just basic survival.

I will be writing to the MEC of Safety and Security in Gauteng, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, to request an immediate investigation into this incident.

The MEC must act swiftly to ensure that this type of behaviour does not continue and that those involved are brought to justice.

Those individuals who have chosen a position of public office should treat all South African’s with dignity when enforcing the law.

There is no room for such abuse of our most vulnerable members of society.
