DA Limpopo Provincial Leader
Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha must urgently intervene at Mogalakwena Municipality following the failure of the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Makoma Makhurupetja, to protect whistle blowers in that municipality. We believe that coordinated political assassinations are being planned in this municipality.
The murder this weekend of Mogalakwena Community Forum leader and corruption whistle blower, Mr Piet Pale, is extremely worrying. The DA can confirm that Mr Pale’s name appears on a “hit list” that we have in our possession. A number of other individuals who helped Mr Pale uncover corruption in the municipality are also on the list. We have submitted the list, and all other information relating to this case, to the police for further investigation.
The list we have received includes a local DA councillor, Marcelle Maritz, the Municipal Manager and three other members of the Community Forum. We know that these individuals were all involved in uncovering corruption in the municipality.
The seriousness of the situation has been confirmed by the fact that the municipality has already hired a private security company to protect these individuals immediately after Pale’s murder.
A murder case number 370/6/2014 has been opened but no arrests have been made so far.
We want Premier Mathabatha to take action and establish a task team that will probe what is going on in this municipality. We believe that there is strong evidence that this murder is politically motivated, and could be followed by other murders.
The DA will further seek an urgent meeting with the Police Commissioner Lt-General Masemola to discuss the measures to protect all the individuals on the ‘hit list’ we received.
