Patients crowd beds, sleep on floor at Bara Hospital

Jack Bloom MPL

DA Gauteng Shadow Health MEC

I am shocked at complaints I have received that patients crowd beds and sleep on the floor at the Internal Medicine wards at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Photographs have been sent to me showing two patients crowded into one bed, and elderly people lying on the floor.

Doctors are also forced to examine some patients in chairs.

Most of the patients suffer from respiratory diseases which have worsened because of the cold weather.

The crowded conditions are unhygienic and increase the likelihood of cross-infection.

Diagnosis for these patients is slow because there are not enough CT scanners and ultra-sound machines, which means they have to be kept in the wards longer than necessary.

The newly opened Jabulani Hospital should be relieving the pressure on Bara hospital, but unfortunately this is not happening, probably because Jabulani is not yet fully operational after its rushed opening shortly before the election.

Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu must take urgent steps to ensure that this inhuman situation at Bara is resolved as soon as possible with extra resources.
