Annelie Lotriet MP

DA Free State Provincial Chairperson

The DA retained two wards in the Free State by-elections held yesterday in Ward 24 in Bloemfontein and Ward 17 in Kroonstad, with an increased majority.

In Ward 17, Kroonstad, Moqhaka Local Municipality, the DA increased its percentage share of the vote with 15.5% from 72.4% in the 2011 Municipal Elections to 87.9% in yesterday’s by election. Out of the 1720 votes cast, the DA received 1509 votes, the ANC 134 and the FF+ only 75. The newly elected DA councillor for Ward 17 is Spaski Geldenhuis.

In Mangaung, Bloemfontein Ward 24, the DA grew its percentage share of the vote by 1.8%. The DA won the ward with 89.57% in yesterday’s by-election compared to our result of 87.81% in 2011. The total number of votes cast came in at 2527 votes of which the DA received 2258 votes, the ANC 135 and the FF+ 128 votes. Dirk Kotze has been elected councillor to Ward 24.

We thank each and every voter who came out yesterday and voted DA and we congratulate the newly elected councillors.

These encouraging results prove that more and more people are placing their trust in the only party in South Africa that delivers quality basic services and ensures good, clean and effective governance. People are placing their trust in the only viable alternative to ANC governance.

We are confident that in the run-up to the 2016 Municipal Elections the DA in the Free State will substantially increase its share of the vote and perhaps be elected into local government.

The DA continues to grow. Together we are building a new majority, united in our diversity, working towards an ‘Open, Opportunity Society for All’.
