Gauteng Health Finance chief is suspended

The Gauteng Health Department has been rocked by the suspension of its Chief Financial Officer Ndoda Biyela.

Staff have not been informed why he has been suspended on full pay, but it is suspected that he faces corruption allegations.

Ndoda was appointed as finance chief in September 2012 after serving a period as acting Head of the Gauteng Health Department.

His suspension could be related to a linen contract reportedly awarded in May last year to Emperor Commodities for R5.1 million without going to tender.

The company then raised its price to R18 million, importing linen which should have been procured locally.

Biyela reportedly wrote in an addendum that tender requirements were waived because of the urgency to procure linen for the Jabulani and New Natalspruit Hospitals.

I am greatly disappointed that yet another senior official faces serious disciplinary action. This department has suffered from a high turnover of top officials who have left under a cloud.

Biyela’s suspension should not be shrouded in secrecy.

Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu must inform us why he is suspended and what arrangements are being made to ensure that financial controls are enforced.
