DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Economic Development
Gauteng Economic Development MEC Lebogang Maile has single-handedly changed the face of Premier David Makhura’s executive when he announced that his portfolio of economic development would be expanded to include agriculture, rural development and land reform.
This unprecedented move, announced by MEC Maile last Friday, was the cause for major uncertainty in the Gauteng Legislature during the past few days, as Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) and committee staff were left completely in the dark as to when the proposed changes would take place or whether they have already.
If the proposed reshuffle is indeed true, it would have a positive impact on Gauteng’s economic development, as the DA has long been a proponent of combining economic and agricultural development into one portfolio in order to boost job creation.
However, such changes will only truly benefit the people of Gauteng if the political leadership of that portfolio is changed.
The DA has previously declared its view that Maile is not a fit person for the position of MEC for Economic Development, and this prank confirms our view of him as a political maverick and opportunist, who only acts in his own self-interest.
With only 55 days into Premier Makhura’s first term in office, the cracks in his administration are already beginning to show, as no effort has been made on his behalf to set the record straight.
The DA will today write to Premier Makhura asking him to clarify MEC Maile’s “announcement”, and if true, to act in the interests of the people of this province and take decisive action against MEC Maile.
The hopes, dreams and aspirations of Gauteng’s people must not be used as political fodder for power plays within the ANC
