Joburg Council legal scam requires further investigation

Fred Nel MPL

Shadow MEC of Co-operative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements

Media reports recently indicated that the City of Johannesburg uncovered a legal scam which could have cost the council R21 million.

While is it a relief that this scam was exposed, there are no indications from the city as to what action will be taken against those involved.

I will therefore be writing to the MEC of Co-operative Governance to establish:

  1. The name of the law firm involved
  2. Whether any official charges have been pressed against the perpetrators
  3. Whether this law firm has any current contracts in place with the provincial government or any other municipalities in the province

It is imperative that the law firm is publically named and not allowed to do any further business with government.

This incident nearly cost the people of Gauteng an enormous amount of money and we cannot risk public funds being abused in such a manner.
