Neil Campbell MPL
DA Shadow MEC of Roads and Transport
The DA welcomes the announcement by construction group Murray and Roberts (M&R) that they will contribute R300 million towards the total amount required to repair the Gautrain line between Rosebank and Park Station.
The Bombela Concession Company (BCC), of which M&R is a shareholder, must now clarify how the remaining R367 million will be paid.
BCC must accept responsibility for poor workmanship in this instance and respect the terms of an arbitration agreement which found in favour of the Gauteng provincial government.
BCC has already benefitted from a large portion of the R30 billion Gautrain contract and should not allow this repair cost to fall on the people of South Africa.
It is shameful that BCC has tried to avoid responsibility in this case knowing full well that after their 15 year contract to run the system is up these issues would have become the public’s problem.
I will also be writing to the MEC of Roads and Transport to clarify when these repairs will take place and to ensure that a plan is established to avoid disruption to commuters using the line.
