Jacques Smalle (MPL)
DA Limpopo Provincial Leader
The DA will be writing a letter to the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, seeking a thorough explanation pertaining to her pronouncement of revitalising water sources in Giyani.
There are more than 300 boreholes in the area, yet only 1 % of the boreholes are working due to theft and poor maintenance plan by the district municipality.
Minister Mokonyane has allocated R62 million to maintain water boreholes and water pipelines to more than 50 villages in and around the area.
While the DA welcomes the intervention by Minister Mokonyane to allow Lepelle Northern Water Board to resume the responsibility of supplying water in Giyani, we are deeply concerned about the safety of the water borehole pumps and their maintenance plans as it has failed before.
In the previous financial year, an estimated R200 million was allocated to Mopani District Municipality to address the water shortage but the money was under spent leaving the residents without water.
The Minister’s pronouncement of allocating R62 million had no further details regarding how all these water pipes and boreholes will be monitored.
The district municipality already has a bad history of failing to utilise funds meant for water provision and it is possible that this money will also be misused as there is no clear policy to ensure the safety of water infrastructure.
The DA wants the Minister to provide us with a risk policy plan and how this water provision programme will be rolled out without delay, theft or vandalism.
