Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has already secured a deal with Chippa United for the use of its stadium. Msunduzi Municipality’s reasoning that Maritzburg United was offered R36 million ratepayers’ money in sponsorship does raise suspicions.
Maritzburg United was never seriously relocating and opposition councillors and the public were grossly misled. Further, the “agreement” also stated that 100 tickets to local games were to be issued via ward councillors for distribution to soccer enthusiasts.
Now councillors find themselves as public relations officers for the club. Councillors and ward committees are being enticed to set up supports’ clubs in their wards. Membership of the ward supporters’ club will cost R50 per annum. All the money will ostensibly be used for soccer development in the ward, but development by whom?
Brian Zuma quit the municipality to become spokesperson for Maritzburg United. Now he is desperate to kick start football development via this most absurd method. The pertinent question remains: what has Maritzburg United got to show in terms of football development in the City of Choice? Is there a soccer academy?
Our R36 million goes to an individual’s soccer club and now we must pay from our pockets to see youth talent developed, a system doomed to fail.
Poverty and unemployment will see R50 used more wisely in improvised homes. Focus on your core business: service delivery.
