DA KZN Spokesperson on Community Safety and Liaison
The Democratic Alliance calls on KZN Community Safety MEC, Willies Mchunu, to release crime statistics for the province on a monthly basis.
The move comes after the Western Cape announced that figures would soon be reported to the public each month. The DA in KZN commends MEC Dan Plato on this forward thinking strategy. We urge MEC Mchunu to take the same progressive step.
The Community Safety Bill, submitted to the KZN Legislature by the DA in June last year, makes provision for such a measure.
Last week’s crime statistics show that KZN is the province with the highest murder rate.
Violent crime in general is either on the rise or has remained static at very high levels. The drug scourge is out of control.
Yet police are hamstrung in their fight against crime by having to refer to statistics that are up to 18 months out of date. Meanwhile the people of our province remain in the dark as to the current crime levels within their own communities.
Not only would monthly crime stats greatly benefit SAPS intelligence, crime fighting strategies and police oversight – they would also assist communities in their own war against this plague.
The MEC must acknowledge the proposed KZN Community Safety Bill. He must also announce his intention to work towards releasing crime stats each and every month of the year.
