DA KZN:  Agriculture office locked and bolted due to non-payment of rent

Francois Rodgers, MPL

DA KZN Spokesperson on Agriculture

It has been brought to the attention of the DA in KwaZulu-Natal that the Pongola office of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has been locked and bolted with chains by the buildings landlord after the provincial Public Works department failed to pay the rent.

It is alleged that the department has not paid rent for more than two months and has ignored requests by the landlord to rectify the matter.

The DA is appalled by this. It is unacceptable that provincial responsibilities should be disrupted over what appears to be nothing more than administrative incompetency.

I have today written to KZN MEC for Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Cyril Xaba.  I have requested that he urgently engage with his counterpart in Public Works to determine how this bizarre situation arose.

I have further called for the relevant official to be held accountable should the closure of this office be the result of administrative bungling.

This entire debacle flies in the face of the provincial operation of “sikhokha ngesikhathi – we pay on time!”
