Research by Statistics South Africa has confirmed that KZN is ranked second after the Eastern Cape when it comes to the use of the bucket toilet system.
Particularly alarming is that there was a sudden resurgence in the number of households using this system between 2012 and 2013. According to Statistics SA, there were no households using bucket toilets in the year 2012 in KZN but during 2013 there were 1585.
The DA is strongly against the use of bucket system. It is offensive and robs people of their dignity.
Premier Senzo Mchunu in his State of the Province address promised the people of this province that his government would eradicate the bucket toilet system. Yet just a few short months later the number of households forced to use this system has grown.
The DA expects the Premier to make good on his promise.
This issue requires a comprehensive investigation by KZN’s COGTA department which must establish why the number is up rather than down and where these toilets are. This needs to be reported to the Legislature and its portfolio committees and most importantly the people of KZN who must be told how the bucket toilet system will be eradicated.
The bucket system remains an ugly reminder of apartheid’s crude inhumane nature and we cannot allow it to be a feature of democratic South Africa.
