KZN Transport MEC, Willies Mchunu, must stick to his promise to help the families of victims of the Fields Hill accident who are still waiting for compensation from the Road Accident Fund (RAF) more than a year after this horrific accident took place.
Late last week it emerged that families and survivors are still waiting for payment from the Fund. The MEC promised to intervene on their behalf to speed up the process.
These families have already suffered two-fold. Not only were they let down by the system – failure to enforce traffic laws/legislation is what led to this accident – many of those who lost their lives were breadwinners.
It is difficult to comprehend why it has taken so long for dependents and families to be paid what is rightful compensation from the RAF. In the interim, they are not only grieving the loss of a loved one, they are under massive financial strain.
The MEC must follow through on his commitment and ensure that they are compensated without further delay.
