DA request Green Scorpions investigation into Soshanguve sewage spills

The ANC caucus in Tshwane exposed its unwillingness to protect the environment when it quashed an urgent DA motion to carry out repairs to raw sewage leaks in Soshanguve.

The motion called on Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa to affect the repairs, put effective leak prevention measures in place and to visit the affected area and meet with residents to discuss a way forward.

Unattended sewage spills in our river systems have a disastrous effect on the health of people and the environment further downstream; the Tshwane Metro’s refusal to address it is punishable by law.

The DA will write to the Environmental Management Inspectorate of the National Department of Environmental Affairs (the Green Scorpions) and request it to investigate violations of the National Water Act from sewage spills from Soshanguve into the Crocodile River West catchment area.

The DA will continue to pressure the Tshwane Metro to comply with national environmental and water legislation.
