DA to write to Public Protector over KZN Gaming and Betting Board investigation

Francois Rodgers, MPL

DA KZN Spokesperson on Finance

I will write to the Public Protector to request that her office report to the KZN Finance portfolio committee on the scope of its investigation into claims of maladministration and the deliberate abuse of public funds by the KZN Gaming and Betting Board.

I will further request that on completion of the probe a written report be tabled to the portfolio committee and a representative from the Protectors Office report on the findings.

The fact that the Board is under investigation is deeply concerning.  Given the serious nature of the claims, the DA supports the probe by the Public Protector’s office.

A media report today also sees the board chairperson, Sibusisiwe Zulu, deny that she is the chair and claim to be an ordinary board member.  This is absurd.  I have personally attending hearings relating to the controversial applications for casino licenses in shopping centres where she was the chair!

The DA has already expressed concern over the manner and procedures followed in these public hearings and the concept behind these casinos.

I shall request that KZN Finance MEC, Belinda Scott, call upon the chairperson of the board to appear before the portfolio committee to address all the unanswered questions relating to the current application process.

It is the DA’s opinion that correct procedures in terms of the Gaming and betting Act have not been adhered too.

It is also abundantly clear that there is a huge ground swell of opposition to the proposal.  It would therefore be amiss of the DA not to ensure that correct procedures have been followed and we will continue to do this through rigorous oversight.
