DA KZN Spokesperson on COGTA
The Democratic Alliance welcomes the decision to dissolve the Mpofana Council by invoking Section 139 of the Constitution. We further welcome the fact that the municipality has been placed under provincial administration.
The decision comes after several weeks of unrest which has disrupted not only the lives of this community but also the main transport network in the province. It also comes after months of allegations of mismanagement, corruption and in-fighting within the municipality.
The reality is that the MEC should have acted sooner – tensions within the Mpofana Council have been simmering for ages.
Instead, the situation was left until it reached explosion point.
The growing number of KZN municipalities under provincial administration is evidence of the result of cadre deployment. The DA also notes the request to extend current intervention within the Umvoti and Abaqulasi Councils.
It is extremely disappointing that municipalities are being run into the ground and then taking years to be turned around.
The DA will continue to monitor the situation in Mpofana as with all other municipalities that have failed in their mandate to deliver.
