The DA welcomes the appointment of a contractor to repair the sewer infrastructure in Del Judor Ext 4 in the Emalahleni municipality, where raw sewerage has been spewing from pipes for weeks.
This spill, a result of the poor infrastructure maintenance by the Emalahleni Municipality, was brought to the attention of the DA by concerned residents. While the Emalahleni Administrator could’ve taken proactive steps to appoint contractors weeks ago, we are pleased that he has finally taken action.
It is of great concern that this sewer spill has severely harmed the eco system and has caused extensive pollution to the Olifants River. The municipality must ensure that tests are done to establish the extent of the damage and that processes are put in place to rectify any damage done to the environment.
The newly appointed contractor has a mammoth task ahead in order to ensure that the infrastructure is properly fixed and maintained. The DA can only hope that the appointment of this contractor will bring the much needed relief from a potentially hazardous situation which affects the lives of the residents on a daily basis.
The DA will be monitoring the progress in this area very closely and will work closely with the administration to ensure that the dignity of this town is restored. It is our constitutional mandate to hold the executive to account and we will discharge this mandate without any fear or favour.
