Free State Health Crisis: Department even failing the dead

Free State Provincial Legislature

The Free State Health crisis continues to worsen. The DA is flabbergasted at reports that a strike at the Bloemfontein State Mortuary has resulted in the delayed collection of the mortal remains of deceased individuals.

According to the SAPS in Bloemfontein, the SAPS have been forced to contract private mortuaries to collect and safe keep bodies after an incident last weekend that saw the body of woman involved in a car accident lie in the sun for several hours.

Not only is the Free State Department of Health unable to care for the living, but they are unable to ensure the dignified treatment of our deceased loved ones. Clearly the crisis within the provincial department has resulted in a total disregard for both the living and the dead.

It is absolutely and undeniably unacceptable that this sorry state of affairs continue unabated. What will it take for Premier Ace Magashule to accept that Free State Health is in crisis and to fire the grossly incompetent MEC for Health, Dr Benny Malakoane.

I will submit written questions to MEC Malakoane in the Legislature to ascertain the reasons of the strike at the state mortuary, when the strike commenced, and what action the department has taken to ensure the smooth running of the mortuary so that it can continue to treat our dead loved ones with the dignity, compassion and respect they deserve.
