Mamelodi Hospital guards assault man taking pics of ill mom

I am appalled that a man was reportedly assaulted yesterday by security guards at the Mamelodi Hospital after taking pictures of his elderly mother in a hospital queue.

According to Mr Pierre Steyn, he was attacked yesterday by hospital security guards who took his phone to delete pictures and ejected him from the premises, telling him never to return.

Hospital staff told him that he had no right to take pictures after his 66-year-old mother Gesina Pearson had waited unattended for 15 hours.

This is completely unacceptable behaviour. I was also once assaulted by a staff member at the Helen Joseph Hospital for taking pictures of a long queue of patients.

There should be no place for such thuggish authoritarianism in our hospitals.

Security guards should protect our hospitals from theft and evil-doers, rather than attack innocent visitors.

I will be taking up this case to ensure that there is a proper inquiry into this matter, and appropriate disciplinary steps taken.
