The City of Tshwane has failed to resolve ongoing issues involving illegal electricity connections in large parts of Mamelodi, Extension 2.

This was revealed during a recent internal hearing of the Gauteng Petitions Committee, where petitioners continued to raise this issue despite having brought it to the attention of the committee last year.

The committee was first made aware of the illegal connections during an oversight visit to the area in August 2013.

Commitments made by the City of Tshwane to resolve this issue after the visit have not been honoured.

Illegal connections often lead to fatalities and serious injury, particularly among children playing unknowingly near unearthed cables.
They also cause disruptions to properly electrified structures and increase the city’s electricity costs unnecessarily.

We call on the Mayor of the City of Tshwane to act promptly and honour the commitments made by his administration to solve these issues.

The petitions committee is an important platform for Gauteng residents to raise their concerns directly with elected officials. The city must show that it takes these seriously and not wait for residents to take matters into their own hands.
