Police assaulted DA Councillor: IPID must investigate

Jacques Smalle (MPL)

DA Limpopo Provincial Leader

Yesterday, the DA requested the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to probe police officials who brutally assaulted and detained our Councillor in Fetakgomo Municipality, Derick Mosoana, during the community protest on Monday.

It is alleged that Cllr Mosoana was assaulted by seven police officers for taking pictures during the protect at Ga Nchabeleng.

He was ordered to delete all the pictures on his tablet while being violently thrown into the police van.

The police instructed him to take off all the DA regalia he was wearing.

Cllr Mosoana was released four hours later and opened a case of assault against the police at Apel Police Station.

The growing trend of police brutality cannot be accepted and is a clear indication of the abuse of power and basic human rights violation.

The DA has also noted that the police at the station failed to report the matter to the IPID to start investigating the case within 24 hours which strongly suggests that the police want to conceal the information and delay the case investigations

The DA also urges the Police Commissioner ,Lt Gen Fannie Masemola to suspend all the policemen involved with immediate effect.
