Public Protector must probe Maruleng municipality

Jacques Smalle (MPL)

DA Limpopo Provincial Leader

Today, the DA has laid a charge with the Public Protector to probe the financial misconduct in Maruleng Municipality.

The DA has discovered that the municipality paid close to R1 million to two companies that were not registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) to repair municipal sewerage pipes and pumps.

These companies have been doing business with the municipality and getting tenders without following the correct procedures.

The documents in DA’s possession ,indicates that payments were made between October and April this year. Questioning the accounting officers’ intent, which have violated the MFMA regulations.

The AG report has shown that the municipality struggles with non compliance to SCM regulations and has occurred irregular expenditure of R6.5 million.

The DA is deeply concerned about the manner in which tenders are being awarded and the financial affairs of the municipality.

We have also noted that the same documents that are in our possession, were also handed over to the MEC for Cooperative Governance , Makoma Makhurupetsa and Minister Pravin Gordhan on the 26 August 2014.

The DA will further be posing questions to both the national and provincial departments to get a thorough report about the steps that they took to intervene on these tender irregularities.
