R257 million spent on Gauteng hospital security

Jack Bloom MPL

DA Gauteng Shadow Health MEC

R257 million has been spent on security at Gauteng hospitals and clinics in the last financial year from April 2013 to March 2014.

This was disclosed today by Acting Health MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane in reply to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature.

According to Nkosi-Malobane, R189 million was spent on private security companies and a further R68 million on other security-related costs.

Only one investigation into security contract irregularities has taken place in the past five years. This was at Sterkfontein Hospital where irregularities were found and an official was dismissed.

The high figure for security costs disclosed today for the first time shows that we get poor value for what is spent in view of shocking security lapses at our hospitals, including the recent horrific assault on a nurse at the Helen Joseph Hospital.

Security costs for public hospitals have more than doubled in the last few years.

I suspect a lot of corruption on the awarding of security contracts and will press for a full investigation into this matter.
