Unlawful transportation of workers ends in tragedy

Spokesperson – Public Works, Roads & Transport

The DA is saddened by the tragic loss of life on the R40 between Hazyview and White River this evening.

According to reports, six people lost their lives and another ten were seriously injured when a truck that was transporting farm workers collided with a panel van at approximately 16:00 yesterday afternoon.  Eye witnesses state that the truck was travelling in the yellow lane when the panel van proceeded to overtake.  The truck pulled back into the main road and they collided, after which both vehicles overturned.

The DA will call on the MEC of Public works, Roads and Transport to investigate whether the truck was correctly licensed to transport passengers in this manner. Often, open vehicles transporting passengers are not equipped to ensure their safety in the event of an accident.  The traffic department must make this a priority to ensure that the lives of passengers are not endangered in this manner.

The DA would like to extend our condolences to the families of the deceased.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this very sad time.
