Abandoned school project: AG must investigate

Desiree van der Walt (MP)

DA Shadow Deputy Minister on Basic Education

The DA will be writing a letter to the Auditor General , Thembekile Kimi Makwetu , to further probe the cost of the abandoned school project meant for Setotolwane Secondary School for the Deaf and Blind in Mankweng outside Polokwane.

The project consist of several classrooms, hostels, two residences, laundries, and more than 20 mobile classrooms. Yet the Department of Basic Education failed to officially move the learners to the new school.

The newly built school has been abandoned for a long period whilst the current school has been declared “unfit” for several years now and promises to move these vulnerable learners has resulted in nothing.

Windows , doors , geyzers , toilets , kitchen , offices , bathrooms, ceilings and fence have been vandalised at the new school by the local residents and learners from the nearby schools.

Abandoning such multimillion school is a clear waste of taxpayer’s money and the department must urgently take responsibility to accelerate the process of moving the learners and teachers to their new school.

The DA has already laid charges with Chapter nine Institutions including Public Protector and Human Rights Commission to probe the maladministration, corruption and violation of children’s rights.

We will also seek an independent assessor to evaluate damage to the project to give us an estimated figure on the cost to fix the damage caused by vandalism.

The DA is considering criminal charges against the Department with the SAPS to ensure that all the officials or any other individual who might be responsible for delaying and vandalizing the project are arrested.
