City must explain failure to create jobs for Alex residents on local projects

The City of Johannesburg must explain its alleged failure to use Alexandra residents to carry out part-time work in the community.

This morning disaffected residents took to the streets of Ward 75 in protest after it was revealed that the city employed residents from outside the township for these positions.

The DA condemns any violence associated with the protest; however, it is clear that residents are becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of response by the city to their concerns.

Alex remains one of Gauteng’s poorest areas and the community is afflicted by dire poverty and unemployment.

Despite billions of rands being pumped into the Alexandra Renewal Project, the area is yet to witness any significant upliftment or growth.

The City of Johannesburg has failed to show the people of Alex that it truly cares about its future.

I will be working with my colleagues in the Johannesburg Council to establish why these projects were given to non-residents of the township and what plans the city has to rectify this situation.
