The DA in Mpumalanga notes with concern the imminent departure of the Mpumalanga Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thulani Ntobela, whose contract will lapse at the end of October 2014 and will not be renewed.
The DA would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation for the contribution made by General Ntobela to the SAPS and our Province in general. Mpumalanga saw a decrease in the majority of crime categories during his tenure and we would like to wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
General Ntobela executed his duties with distinction and the DA urges the National Police Commissioner, Ms Riah Phiyega to ensure the necessary contingency measures are in place as we are fast approaching the festive season.
Efforts must be made to prevent a spark in crime before and during the festive season. Ms Phiyega must assure the people of Mpumalanga that the province will not enter the festive season without a Provincial Commissioner.
Ms Phiyega must make known her preferred candidate sooner rather than later to avoid any gaps developing in our anti-crime strategy. The position of Provincial Commissioner is critical in the fight against crime and Commissioner Phiyega will serve the people of Mpumalanga well to extend Lt Gen Ntobela’s contract until after the festive season as he assists the new commissioner in settling into his or her new position, as criminals up their game during the festive season.
The DA wish to once again pay tribute to General Ntobela for serving our Province with such honour and integrity.
