Committee Member: Co-operative Governance
The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng notes the latest comments by Gauteng MEC of Co-operative Governance, Jacob Mamabolo, regarding the need for an overhaul of the Ward Committee System.
This is an acknowledgement of the disfunctionality of the system and the political power struggles which undermine the work of these bodies.
Ward committees are an important tool in local governance and communication. It is through these bodies that residents are able to monitor developments in their areas and communicate issues via their ward councillors and beyond.
Unfortunately factionalism, particularly between the ANC and its alliance partners, continues to destabilise the system and disrupt the mandates of these committees.
Ward committees should always prioritise the interests of the community which they serve; over and above individual and party-political interests.
The DA will continue to work to create and support effective and efficient committees which place the needs of the community at the forefront of their work.
