The DA has laid a charge of murder against the service providers and the department of education following the death of four learners after they ate food that was unfit for human consumption through the department’s school nutrition programme.
The department’s confidential report indicated that food were contaminated with glass and stones.
Section 2(1) of the foodstuffs Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act , 1972 (Act No. 54 of 1972) prevents any person from selling food that is unfit for human consumption.
The DA is further concerned that officials deployed to monitor the school nutrition programme stopped working last month due to the department failure to pay them according to news reports.
We will be approaching the MEC for education’s office to establish a task team that will not only monitor the nutrition programme but the quality of food being prepared to learners.
