Ladysmith shootings:  DA calls for increased crime intelligence

Sizwe Mchunu, MPL

Leader of the DA in the KZN Legislature

The DA in KwaZulu-Natal is deeply disturbed by the tragic deaths of 16 people, including a young child, after a group of gunmen went on the rampage this past weekend in Ladysmith.

We express our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones.

The deaths are believed to be the result of mistaken identity.  The shootings also caused a horrific accident.

The Ladysmith area has been a hot spot for the past month and a half in particular, with a number of shootings taking place.

MEC Willies Mchunu has himself stated that this is a community ‘gripped by fear’.  The DA therefore welcomes his swift response in sending a high-level delegation to investigate.

All indications point to gang warfare and so the question must be asked – where is crime intelligence in all of this?

The DA expects MEC Mchunu to ensure that this community is prioritised in terms of surveillance.  We also urge the MEC to present a progress report and security plan for the area to the KZN Community Safety portfolio committee.

It is unacceptable that ordinary people should have to live under such frightening circumstances.
