Mookgophong residents at risk of drinking contaminated water

The DA will be writing to the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Makoma Makurupetsa and the MEC for Environmental Affairs , Seaparo Sekoati for their immediate intervention following the municipality’s decision to direct the sewerage overflows in the township towards the Nylsvley.

This is an area where the borehole fields are based that supplies water to town.

The discovery was made by the DA during an oversight visit and it’s clear that the municipality is recklessly polluting its own water supply.

Furthermore , this sewerage is now flowing into the Nylsvley Nature Reserve.

The nature reserve is a highly protected area under the international treaty of RAMSAR which focuses on endangered Vleyland areas and it’s bird life.

The DA has already engaged the municipality on numerous occasion regarding the matter but nothing has been done despite allocating millions to fix the sewage system.

We will be taking water samples to be tested at a laboratory to determine if it is suitable for human consumption.

We will further be asking our colleagues in the National Assembly to use parliamentary process to pressurise the municipality to resolve this matter urgently.
