Nkandla accident: DA call for urgent and comprehensive investigation

Sizwe Mchunu, MPL

Leader of the DA in the KZN Legislature

The Democratic Alliance calls for a full-scale investigation into the cause of an accident involving a KZN Health Emergency Medical Service Planned Patient Transport Bus which claimed the life of three people, left six in a critical condition, saw 10 seriously injured and left 40 with minor injuries.

According to reports, the accident took place last night as more than 50 patients were being transported from Ngwelezane Hospital to Ekombe and Nkandla hospitals.  The vehicle is believed to have veered off the road and overturned.

The DA expresses its most sincere condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and wish for a speedy recovery for those who were injured.

We are deeply disturbed by this incident.  We want to believe that this was an accident rather than the result of any health official’s negligent driving.

We therefore call on the KZN Health and Transport departments to launch an urgent and comprehensive investigation.

As part of our oversight role, we will also submit a parliamentary question to KZN Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo regarding the state of the province’s ambulances and driver competency of those who are employed to transport patients.
