R57 million spent on unused transport infrastructure in Gauteng

Justus De Goede MPL

DA Spokesperson on Transport

According to a report tabled in the Gauteng Transport Committee yesterday, R57 million worth of transport infrastructure in the province is currently unused.

This consists of the Zandspruit inter-modal facility, built in 2009 and worth R27 million, and a similar R30 million facility in Bophelong.

Department officials were unable to explain to the committee why these extremely costly projects are not up and running.

I will be submitting questions to Gauteng MEC for Transport, Ismail Vadi, to establish exactly what the delay in this regard is and what timeframe the department has to open these facilities.

In a province which contributes so much to South Africa’s economy, it is unthinkable that these transport nodes are simply sitting unused.

The MEC and other government officials should be doing everything in their power to get public transport running efficiently and provide opportunities for the people of Gauteng to improve their mobility.
