Don’t pop the champagne corks just yet

KZN’s improved municipal audit figures are certainly a welcome change – but I wouldn’t pop the champagne corks just yet.

While 20 clean municipal audits are better than before, we should remember that this represents just a third of the total number of entities within the province.

We should also remember that – for the past decade – KZN’s ANC-led leadership has been promising clean audits across all municipalities by 2014.

Then there is the fact that the province’s two largest municipalities – Ethekwini and Msunduzi – do not feature on the clean audit list.  In reality, the smaller municipalities who made it onto the list have a lot less to account for, simply because they do so much less.

That KZN’s two major municipalities are not blazing the trail in the quest for good governance is a serious concern.
