Is Health MEC Malakoane hiding the truth about his office upgrades?

DA MPL in the Free State Provincial Legislature

It would appear that Health MEC, Dr Benny Malakoane, is intentionally misleading the public and undermining the Legislature regarding refurbishments made to his offices in June last year.

It is alleged that more than R1 million was utilised for the project.

The DA objected to such a wasteful splurge on the offices of the MEC at a time when public health services in the province were taking strain due to the gross mismanagement of resources by the department.

I subsequently submitted a written question to MEC Malakoane asking him for the details pertaining to any and all renovations conducted at any of the department’s offices.

MEC Malakoane replied that no renovations have been conducted.

We find MEC Malakoane’s answer extremely bizarre, since when the DA first made the matter of the renovations public, the MEC’s spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, was widely quoted in the free media, acknowledging that renovations were brought to the offices, but dismissed the alleged price tag of R1 million.

The DA would now like to know who between the MEC and his spokesperson is trying to hide information that should be divulged in the interest of the public?

It would be wise for MEC Malakoane to come clean on the renovations conducted at his offices without delay.

I will also write to the Acting Speaker, Sizwe Mbalo once the Legislature reopens, requesting him to refer the matter to the Ethics Committee to investigate MEC Malakoane on charges of intentionally misleading the legislature and for failure to uphold his oath of office.
