Councillor William Petje
Elias Motsoaledi Municipality
The DA will be writing a letter to the MEC for Human Settlements, Makoma Makurupetja, to urgently take action against Elias Motsoaledi Mayor, Julia Mathebe for failing to act against allegations of irregular allocation of RDP houses by ward councillor Seun Mogotji, in Ntwane village (ward 10).
It is alleged that this ward councillor and ward committee member Patricia Mohlamonyane, have tampered with the RDP allocation list and awarded only their relatives and others they know, omitting those who need and deserve the houses.
The department established a task team after the discovery was made by the DA and confirmed that the allocations were indeed irregular.
It is alleged that more than 10 people benefited including the councillor’s mother and other ward committee members.
The task team established that the ward councillor and his committee members caused the department to incur unnecessary financial burden by using approved beneficiaries’s applications to allocate RDP houses to their cronies and relatives.
This means that the department must budget more money for building houses to go to the legitimate beneficiaries.
The task team recommended that disciplinary action be taken against the ward councillor for contravening the provision of schedule 1 (2) (a) and (b) of the code of conduct for councillors.
It is further recommended that the Mayor must terminate the services of the ward committee with immediate effect. Those who were allocated RDP houses, must immediately vacate their houses.
All these recommendations were never implemented by the Mayor despite receiving a comprehensive report from the department encouraging her to act swiftly against these individuals.
The Mayor’s failure to act shows that she is protecting these corrupt individuals and promoting corruption within the municipality.
The DA is urging MEC Makurupetja to intervene in ensuring that all the recommendations are implemented, and action be taken against Mayor Mathebe with immediate effect.
