Westrige Post Office must be reopened

Denis Joseph MPP

Deputy Chief Whip in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament

I have written to Mr Fraser of the Westrige Mall property management, requesting that the Post Office in Westrige Mall, Mitchell’s Plain, be reopened. I have done so on behalf of the community of Mitchell’s Plain, who are still without postal services.

The closure is as a result of payment agreements not being adhered to. However, upon the intervention by Minister Siyabonga Cwele, the Post Office was placed under administration and it was placed under the supervision of the Treasury. As such, the issue of non-payment will be addressed, following these interventions.

In the interim, while the Post Office remains closed, the people of Mitchell’s Plain suffer the difficulty of not having a postal service at their disposal. We must not underestimate the damage that this can cause. Lack of access to this channel of communication results in a loss of economic opportunities. These are in the form of job opportunities as well as donations made to non-governmental and community organisations, via the post.

As such, I also urge the Westrige Post Office to negotiate an agreement with the Westrige Mall property management, so that they may return to regular operation. A concerted effort must be made to deliver this service to those who depend on it.

The Democratic Alliance takes the plight of people affected by this very seriously. We will continue to monitor the matter until it is resolved.
