Blouberg MM must be suspended

Charles Keetse

DA councillor at Blouberg local municipality:

The DA has submitted a letter to the Blouberg Municipality Mayor, Serite Sekgoloane, requesting council to suspend the Municipal Manager (MM) Thoka Kgoale with immediate effect for failing to account for more than R10 million according to the AG report.

Despite being a rural municipality with a huge service delivery backlog, the municipality under-spent on their Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) and as a result, R9 million is set to be returned to the National Treasury.

  • A walloping R5 million interest was paid from the municipality’s electricity distribution business due to late payments.
  • An estimated R200 000 paid for goods and service for not following supply chain regulations.
  • More than R787 000 was spent on the legal fees.
  • R3 million for unauthorised expenditure.

It is clear that the MM is failing dismally to manage the financial affairs of the municipality. All these funds could have been utilised to accelerate services within the municipality.

The DA urges the Mayor to urgently take action against Kgoale and hold him accountable for the mismanagement of funds.

The DA also requested that the municipality launch a series of investigations into the financial affairs of the municipality.
