DA KZN: ANC must immediately remove thieving Phongola councillor

Sizwe Mchunu, MPL

Leader of the DA in the KZN Legislature:

THE DA calls on KZN Premier, Senzo Mchunu and provincial COGTA MEC, Nomusa Dube-Ncube to immediately remove Phongola municipality Councillor, Luke Nxumalo following reports that he has been found guilty of theft in a court of law.

Nxumalo was found guilty of stealing a container used by the district municipality to store building materials. He is believed to have ordered that the container be placed at his personal payphone business. Nxumalo was arrested after council opened a case of theft against him.

Not only is Phongola Municipality currently being run by a rocky coalition, it is clearly also plagued by corruption.

The DA regards the actions of this councillor as unforgivable.

Councillors are supposed to represent the interests of the community they serve.  Yet this individual seems to believe that what belongs to the municipality is there for the taking.

In so doing he has shown that he is in fact an enemy of the poor in Phongola and an obstacle to the marginalised receiving a better life.

Both the Premier and the MEC must act in the interests of the people of Phongola and prove to the people of our province that there remains a thread of moral fibre within the ANC.

Any public servant who steals from the people must be removed from office – starting with Councillor Nxumalo.
