DA KZN Spokesperson on Education:
THE DA today launched a KZN School Governing Body (SGB) Elections awareness campaign aimed at highlighting the importance of parent participation in this critical process, which takes place in the province from 6 to 28 March.
Given the numerous challenges our schools face, choosing the right candidates, with the relevant skills, who can add value to the Governing Body and its school cannot be over-emphasised.
KZN’s Education department is by its own admission overwhelmed by cases of abuse, corruption, maladministration and can barely keep itself afloat. SGBs therefore play a pivotal role in governing public schools.
They determine school policy, hear disciplinary matters, employ additional teachers and determine the school budget. Active parents on SGB’s also play an important oversight role on school management and the DA commends them for their sacrifice and dedication to their own communities.
SGB elections, held every three years, are one of the most important items on the province’s Education calendar. Well over a million parents turn out to vote for their peers to fill positions in over 6 000 schools in KZN.
For many people, after the national and local elections, these are the most important engagement they have with the democratic process
As part of the DA’s commitment to this process, we will visit communities across KZN where we will actively encourage parents to participate in the elections, either by standing as candidates or by voting.
The success of education in KZN depends as much on parent participation as it does on the educators and pupils.
