DA secures ward 28 Mhluzi as ANC fails to contest by-election

Anthony Benadie, DA MPL

DA Provincial Leader:

The Democrataic Alliance tonight secured an uncontested by-election in Ward 28 Mhluzi, in the Steve Tshwete municipality (Middleburg).  No other party, including the ANC, submitted a valid candidate nomination before the 17:00 deadliine.

The DA’s Palesa Mabango (Currently a Proportional Councillor in the Steve Tshwete municipality), was the only validly nominated candidate for the ward 28 by-election with today, 2 February, being candidate nomination day.

The ANC, who held the ward, did not submit a valid nomination by failing to submit the legally required R1000.00 bank guaranteed cheque. The ANC attempted to submit the cheque after the cut off time by slipping a cheque under the door of local IEC officers – their efforts were a little too late.

Both the local and provincial IEC officers have confirmed to me that the DA is uncontested in this ward.  According to a representative from the Provincial IEC offices, they have received an IEC report indicating this fact.  The failure by the ANC to nominate a candidate is symbolic of the shambles which the ruling party finds itself in.

In congratulating councillor Palesa Mabango on her uncontested election as ward councillor for ward 28, the DA assures the residents of this ward of only the best representation, that we will support councillor Mabango to the best of our abilities to show the residents of this ward the DA difference.
