Deafening silence at Zwelitsha education head office

Edmund van Vuuren (MPL)

Shadow MEC for Education:

Only a deafening silence has been coming from the head office of the Department of Education in Zwelitsha since last week.  Officials are not picking up telephones nor are emails being responded to.

This is leading to huge frustration and anger across the board.

Our province is crying out for an improvement in the education system, yet no services are currently being rendered by the department.

The offices of the DA in Bhisho have been flooded with phone calls from principals who want to know from the DA what they should do to get some response from the department.

I have written to the MEC for Education, Mandla Makupula, to explain to the public what is going on at his department.

The citizens of this province have the right to know if there is a strike at the department and why.  The MEC must clarify the current state of affairs and must take action to ensure that the department goes back to some semblance of normality.

A functional education system is critical for the growth of our economy.  When in government, we will not allow a situation such as the one currently experienced at the department’s head office to prevail.
