DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Infrastructure Development:
The DA in Gauteng calls on Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba and Gauteng Education MEC Panyanza Lesufi to provide sound coordination in the case of learners who do not have the required immigration documentation being admitted to schools.
The DA has received reports from a school in the West Rand that has been instructed by the Education Department to admit learners who do not have the required identification documentation.
If the required legal framework regarding children of foreign nationals are not met by schools who are instructed by the Department of Education to enrol such children, the school is faced with possible legal action against it, by the Department of Home Affairs.
Education is a basic human right. However, failure to provide quality, accountable and sound leadership by both the Home Affairs department and the Education department adds a risk to schools whose aim it is to ensure that this basic human right is met.
Direction needs to be provided to parents who do not have proper documentation to ensure that the basic requirements are met.
To this end the DA will submit written questions to the MEC requesting him to clarify the department’s cooperation with the Department of Home Affairs, and how immigration issues are coordinated to provide learners with quality education.
