DA Constituency Head: Tshwane:

The Transoranje School for the deaf in Pretoria west is in dire need of assistance from the Gauteng Department of Education

The shortage of personnel – particularly teachers, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, has left the school at its wits end.

Since the start of this school year, there are certain learners who have no teachers, as the contracts of those were employed on a temporary basis were not renewed.

These were teachers who specialised in the foundation phase, a critical phase for children with special needs.

To expound the problem, a new curriculum was introduced by the department; however teachers were not trained on how it should be implemented. This has placed an inordinate amount of pressure on the few dedicated staff at the school.

Learners with special needs are deserving of quality education.

There seem to be no norms and standards applied to special schools, an issue that the DA will drive in the Provincial Legislature.

The DA will write to the Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyazi Lesufi, and insist that the department take swift action in addressing the challenges faced by the Transoranje School for the deaf.
