Gautrain bus drivers’ strike holds economy to ransom

The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) and Bombela Concession Company (BCC) must take immediate steps to resolve the wildcat bus drivers’ strike which has now gone into its second day.

The strike follows hot on the heels of the Reya Vaya bus drivers’ strike, which started on Monday, and as a consequence, thousands of commuters are now left to their own devices to get to and from work.

It is absolutely critical that every component of Gauteng’s public transport network is fully operational every day. The N1 between Pretoria and Johannesburg is already at heavy congestion levels during peak times, and further congestion will cause severe delays.

Gauteng is the heartbeat of the South African economy, and is already reeling from the effects of widespread load-shedding by Eskom.

Every minute of every hour that people are not work, will not just harm the provincial economy, but also that of South Africa.

The DA calls on the GMA, the BCC as well as transport MEC Ismail Vadi to explore alternative measures, such as the use of part-time drivers, while employers and employees iron out their differences.

Gauteng and South Africa cannot afford to be held ransom by unions and groups of individuals who won’t use legitimate means of workplace bargaining.
