MEC Makhurupetje must act on Blouberg jobs-for-pals scandal

Charles Keetse

DA councillor at Blouberg local municipality:

The DA has written to the Limpopo MEC for Cooperate Governance , Makoma Makhurupetje, to urgently implement the findings of an Auditor General report into the Blouberg Municipality, which found that Mayor Serite Sekgoloane , Thoka Kgoale (Municipal Manager) and other Senior officials have been interfering in the appointment of municipal officials by recommending only his close ANC pals for jobs.

The Auditor General found that appointments have been made without interview for a senior manager of cooperative services, two traffic officers, PMS Manager, a cleaner, four interns in the finance department, a truck driver, a drivers licence examiner and an examiner of motor vehicles without conducting interviews or following the correct procedures.

The AG further discovered that:

  • The short-listing process was not fair and HR policy was also violated;
  • Some of the appointed officials never reported for duty;
  • Vetting was not done; and
  • There was no concurrence from the MEC in the appointment of the senior managers.

It is clear that the Municipal Manager and the Mayor as the political head of the municipality, orchestrated the plan to hire these associates aligned to the ANC and disregarded all the procedures that needed to be followed.

The DA urges the MEC to urgently implement the recommendation made by AG to recall all these officials and re-advertise all the positions by following the correct procedures.
